Jaime Jackson Law recently teamed up with two other law firms to help resolve a case involving a defective tire. Our client suffered horrific burns when the tread from a tire on his truck detached from its casing. This caused the truck to go out of control, rollover in the median, and catch fire. The case involved a “retreaded tire.”
What are retreaded tires?
Retreaded tires, sometimes known as recapped tires, have undergone a remanufacturing process to replace the worn tread on used tires with new tread to help extend the life of the tire. Tire manufacturers essentially take a worn-out tire and place a new tread on it. Retreads account for nearly one-half of all replacement tires in the North American truck tire market. Some tires, however, are simply too worn out and should never be retreaded.
No proper attachment
In this case, there was no proper attachment between the underlying tire and the new retread. This resulted in the new retread peeling off the tire as the truck was going down the road causing it to crash and catch fire. Anytime a tire fails and causes a car or truck to go out of control and crash, and anytime anyone is injured in the crash, whether it be in the vehicle the tire was on or the other vehicle that was crashed into, the case should be closely looked at for a defective tire case.
